As The Man Says: Seconds out
Boxing, as a skilful sport, was given a stupendous boost with the coming into being of compelling pictures. At the beginning of the 20th century one corner of the ring was cleared to disclose room for the camera to film major bouts and the in the wake footage, silent and jerky as it was, enjoyed tremendous favour when exhibited at such venues as had the equipment to project it. With the development of the cinema, the amusement became the inspiration for many entertaining movies, some of them classics.
Among the earliest pugilists to have been depicted by Hollywood was the Irish-American boxer Jim Corbett, portrayed by Errol Flynn in a 1942 dusting called 'Gentleman Jim'. His adversary John L Sullivan was played by Minor Bond. Flynn's fancy foot work was provided by a double-barrelled and the film was a good-humoured evocation of an earlier age of boxing. Sullivan, himself had his curriculum vitae filmed in a Bing Crosby production entitled 'The Matchless John L', highly fictionalised, but very enjoyable. That was in 1945. The racism that dogged the vocation of Jack Johnson in the early 1900s was recalled in the 1970 show 'The Great White Hope'. In more recent times, Russell Crowe played the Glumness era hero James T Braddock in the 2004 film 'Cinderella Man'.
